(From Our Own Correspondent). Mrs. IT. J. Barnard is still actively canvassing for subscriptions' for the Motor Ambulance Fund, and the latest list of subscriptions brings the amount collected by her up to the creditable sum of £545 lis 3d. Word has bsen received here of the death of Riflema.i Percy Turner, eldest son of Mr. J. Turner, a local baker. Rifleman Tamer was wounded in the recent fighting in Francs, and h?s unfortunately succumbed to his wounds. He was a fine lad, and his death will be regretted by a large circle of friends. Mr. J. Groves has received word that his son, Private Sydney Groves, has 'been wounded and is now in hospital. iHe was wounded in the fore-arm. Private Low, brother to Mrs. J. Sheehy, of Eltham, has also been wounded in tilie recent fighting. A letter, expressing sincere appreciation of the goods supplied by the local Belgian Sewing Guild, has been received by the secretary (Mrs. L. X. Fairhill) from Mr. J. Navaux, secretary of the Belgian Relief Committee in London. Mr. Navanv expressed his thanks to Mrs. Barnard, the president of the guild, for her untiring efforto on behalf of his unfortunate compatriots. Competition between the two rival picture shows is rather keen just now, and a move whic i promises interesting developments wns made 'by the Borough Council on Friday evening, when an offer was received 'l'om Messrs W. J. Tristram and E. Homibin, owners of the hall known as tie Princess Theatre, which has been leased by the Scuth Taranaki Amusement Cm-pany. The offer was for a, period of three years, commencing on N'oveinber 1, VV.G. The Council decided to accept the offer, and the -nayor and deputy-mayor veto authorised to sign the lease. Tt is understood it is the present intention of the Council to use the hall as a music-hall and gymnasium. As a result ot the appeal for Christmas cakes for the soldiers, sufficient ingredients have been donated to make 410 pounds of cake. The taking ofthe- delicacies hna bee:i undertaken by the local bakers, and as a vesun, (w tins of cake arc ready to be (onvarucd to Wellington next week, to b: sent en by the next outgoing transport.
