(From Our Own Correspondent.) 1 nglewood, Yesterday, The returned soldiers of the district are making arrangement? for a monster social and gift auction, the proceeds of which are to be devoted to procuring Christmas comforts t'oi the New Zealand nurses on active service. The Ladies Red Cross Committer are not holding Iheir usual social next month, but are helping the hoys in their effort instead. The monthly medal competition of the CJoIf Club was held on Thursday, when K. \oung again proved the winner with a. net score of 81, A. Johnston being runner-up. The same day H. Thomson beat A. E, Surrey in a championship round. Considerable improvement is noticed in the centre of the town, the City Fathers wisely deciding to trim the trees in the plantation, and top or cut down anything overgrown., ■ Much sympathy was felt for Mrs. Henderson and family when it became known thot her son, who enlisted in Australia, was reported as killed in action. Considerable satisfaction is expressed amongst shareholders locally at the appointment of Mr. Openshow as stock buyer for the Farmers' Freezing Works Company.
