THE CHEESE MARKET.

POSITION STILL UNCERTAIN, (Fioiu Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Scut. 20. "lie cheese market remains in an uncertain condition owing to tin; lack of dclinite information concerning the intentions of the Imperial Government 1 cablegram from London announcing that the Government intended to take steps to keep down the price of cheese ■ s i\"gested that a maximum price would i;xed, or that supplies would 'be requisitioned. That was noarlv a fortnight ago, but apparently the Imperial authorities lime not yet decided what they will do in the matter. Local agents and merchants are not disposed to extend their dealings until they know what the position is going to be. A cablegram from London, received to-da}, stated that "there is a £Towin fr impression that the Government is likely to take over all arrivals of Australian, New Zealand, and Canadian cheese, and possibly also the home output." This statement does not throw mucli light upon the subject, since it does not mention prices or conditions of >ale. Exporters are inclined to believe that if the Imperial Government decides to acquire shipments of cheese on arrival at Home ports, it will pay current wholesale .rates, but naturally there is uncertainty on the point. It would 'be possible. for the Government to requisition all consignments at a fixed price below tlie high level reached in 'New Zealand during the present season. Prices in this country are nominally unchanged, but the truth is that very little business is being done pending the receipt of definite news from London. The new season's cheese is now reaching the stores in considerable quantities. Some of it will be shipped before the end of the present month, but exporters are confessing to some anxiety regarding the prospects as far as shipping space is concerned.
