WAITARA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Yesterday. The following men entrain on Monday morning to join the 21st Reinforcement: A. C. Smith (Urenui), W. A. Honeyfleld (Mokau), D. Smith (Urenui), and W. D. Murray (Waitara). The Mayoress of Wellington (Mrs. Luke) arrived in Waitara to-day for the purpose of submitting proposals for a scheme to provide Christmas gifts for our soldiers.

The Basket Ball held in the Clifton Hall last evening in aid of the Waitara Fire Brigade's funds passed off very successfully in spite of the disappointing attendance, and the firemen hope to clear about £2O as a result. The hall was decorated in first-class fire-fighters' style, and the floor was all that could be desired. The sit-down supper provided was also of the best, the ladies responsible for same being Mesdames Spurdle, Beckbessinger, Blanchard, Hayward, L. Fraser, Trim, Misses Kendrick, and D. Spurdle. The surplus tinned and other edibles were auctioned at the close of the dance, and realised 10s, with a donation of £1 Is from Dr. Campbell. During an interval prior to adjourning to the supper room, a number of baskets were auctioned by Mr. C. Fftirbrother, who succeeded in obtaining bids ranging from 10s to 255, the total received amounting to £8 Ba. A cushion, donated by Mrs. C. Goldsmith, and a table centre were raffled and resulted Tn £S 17s being obtained. The cushion was won by Mrs. Fcek and the table centre by Miss Rose Jury. The dutieß of M.C. were carried out by Mr. Buchanan, Captain Blanchard and Fireman Hayward. The music for the dancing was supplied by the' Waitara Brass Bund and Mr. M. Fowler, with extras by Misses M. Jupp, Taylor,'and Mr. Jack Taylor.
