LANDSLIP AT OTIRA.
SEVERAL HOUSES BURIED. ONE MAN KILLED, By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Postmaster at Otira telegraphs the Under-Secretary for Post Offices, that a huge slip occurred on the west side of Otira, near the post office. Several houses are buried, and one man was killed. A mile of telegraph wire was carried away. Christchurch, Last Night.
Reports from Otira record that a huge landslide occurred at 8.15 yesterday, opposite the Public Works stable. An avalanche came down the hill with a loud roar, and buried a house into which a man* named Charles Morris, who had taken his family out when hearing the slide, had gone back to get his coat. Morris and the house were buried under a huge mass, and it is so far impossible to get the body out. Morris leaves a wife and daughter.
There have also been wash-outs on the railway, but the tunnel works are intact.
