MR. ASQUITH'S INQUIRIES. . London, September 11. Mr. Asquith, during his tour of inspection on the Somme, closely inquired into the supplies and qualty of the ammunition. The Scottish miners claimed a ahii ling increase daly at StratUclydo and have been awarded sxpence. C\ ALLIES TO POOL GOLD. Paris, September 11. M. Ribot, interviewed said: "We are determined to introduce an income-tax. Thanks to the elasticity of this form of taxation, we shall be able to meet a good part of our liabilities, but undue haste in taxation would only scare the country." M. Ribot has arranged with Mr. Asquith and Mr. M'Keima that the Allies will pool gold in order to render the collective financial position more solid, to enable England to maintain the gold standard and enlarge the scope of credit in the United States. The Bank of France is placing a million sterling at the disposal of the British Treasury and the Treasury is opening credit in pounds sterling in favor of France in London. The gold will be returned to the coffers of the Bank of France after the war.
