IN THE EAST.

RUSSIANS WASTE NO WORDS. THE STERN BATTLE AT HALICZ. BRUSILOFF'S SUPERIOR STRATEGY CLEAR PLAXjS AND PERFECT ORGANISATION^ Received Sept. 12, 9.30 p.m. Petrograd, Sept. 13. Experts point out that recent Russian communiques aro remarkable for what they leave unsaid. Most important news is expected daily, yet no word is said until success crowns their effort. A mystery concerns the stern battle at tfalicz, where the Germans are making desperate efforts to secure the retreat of an army which once numbered over 150,000. The German General Staff designed it to 1 cut General Brusiloff's centre. General Brusiloff countered the scheme-, and now the question is whether there is any escape. General Brusiloff's armies on a three hundred mile front continue to advance with methodical stubbornness, indicative of a dear plan and perfected organisation. 'The Russian army, as a fighting machine, is now far superior to what it was at the beginning of the war, despite heavy losses. The first line of troops on the whole European front is strongly manned, and training camps throughout the country are full. Russia's goal is to maintain the pressure on Austria, and thus assist Roumania and the Allies at Salonika to crush Bulgaria and Turkey, thus freeing the Allies for the final concentrated-attack on Germany. It is hoped that the first 6tage will be accomplished this year. Meanwhile General Letchitsky is pushing on in the wooded Carpathians in the directio nof the Bystritza, whither the Roumanians aae also advancing.

HALICZ DOOMED. IEMBERG MUST FOLLOW. Received Sept. 12, 9.30 p.m. London, Sept. 12. Tile Daily Chronicle's correspondent states that Haliez is wavering, the Germans and Turks vainly striving to keep off the line of batteries »whifrh is enveloping Haliez in a cloud of destruction and death. The enemy is only able to use one of the manv railway lines linking with Haliez, and when that town falls, only the Nikolaicv position remains to dispute the Russian advance on Lem■berg.'
