DISTRICT NEWS.

TOKO. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Toko, Sept. 11. Captain ,'/. H. [line, our member, has left for Wellington in order to proceed to the front. Sirs, llinc, who has been slaying with .ie sister (Mrs. C. Bayly), has, w'it'li the family, also gone to Wellington. ilr. K. .laeksun anil Mr. Gordon Mather are leaving wi(h (lie 17th Reinforcements. Miv. Jackson has also gone to see 'her husband ere he sails. News has been received from England that Mr. C. Bayly has obtained a commission. We wore indeed gratified that Mr. Masters was re-elected tc tin Education Board and subsequently made ohairmon. On the other hand it is a matter of great regret that Mr. Marfell did not gain a seat. We hope, however, that at next election he will be successful. The news of the death of Sergeant C. W. Mather, from wounds, on June 3(1. came as a great shock to us all. for we are thereby deprived of the hope of seeing once more in our midst one of the most popular young men of the district. He was over six feet in height, or splendid physique, and devoted to athletic '.sports. Sergeant Mather was the son of the Rev. J. .Mather, of Auckland, and was a native of that city. He attended the Boys' High School, ciiristehureh, and luul been manager on the estate of his uncle. Mr. C. Bayly, of Toko Road, for some years prior to bis departure for the front last February, lie left as corporal in flic* Earl of Liverpool's Own, and while in Egypt received hie promotion. We. were reminded of the brighter side of life by the wedding of MUs Ilcwsmi and Mr. Cook, which took place at Mr*. Jackson's on the "2-1 th. lilt. The inevitable "tin-kettling" is to take place when the happy couple return from their honeymoon. There is to be a patriotic concert at Toko Road, at which there will be a display of local and outside talent Our district 'has lately acquired two boom, that of receiving the morning paper daily, and, further, that of having the weekly visits of a music teacher from Now .Plymouth.
