GOLF.
NEW PLYMOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP. A GREAT GAME. JOHNS SUCCESSFUL ON THE LAST GKEEN. The final match for the New Plymouth golf championship was played on the Waiwakaiho links on Saturday between Messrs. F. S. Johns and A. Bewley, and a splendid contest resulted in the former securing the coveted honor in the last shot of the match. The green Were in splendid ojrdcr, both players were in tip-top form, and what proved one of the most exciting golf courses held in New Plymouth was witnessed by a large number of enthusiasts. The morning rounds evidenced that there was little to choose between the players, but Bewley playing with more aplomb than his opponent, was 2 up at the 18th hole. The afternoon round was full of excitement, and at the 12th hole Johns was 3 down. However, -by some excellent shots, he secured the 13th, 14th, and 15th holes, and squarpd. The two following holes -were halved, and on the play on the. home green the verdict resulted. Johns came well on to the green, and with two easy putts scored the hole and won the championship, amidst much excitement, WITIORA CLUB. The ladies' championship has now reached the final stage. The following are the detailed results:— First Round. —Miss A. Hawke defeated Mrs. Dell, 2 up and 1; Miss K. Bennett defeated Miss E. Brooker, 4 up and 3. Second Round. —Miss E. Gilbert defeated Miss M. Stohr, ft up and 5; Mrs. Buxton defeated Miss Hawke, 8 up and 7; Miss Rundlc defeated Miss Bennett, 6 up and 5; defeated Miss M. Tiplady, 2 up. Semi-finals. —Mrs. Buxton defeated Miss Gilbert, 3 up and 1; Miss Rundlc defeated Miss Goldwater, 4 up and 3 Both matches were very well contested Mrs. Buxton and her opponent being "all square" at the turn and again at the 14th hole. Miss Rundle. won the first three holes from her opponent and at the Oth had reduced her lead to 1 up; at the turn she was 2 up, though both players were out in 50. This week the fifth match of the series will be played.
