Secretary, New Plymouth Fire Board, advised that the Council's contribution /or the- current year, had been assessed at £725. payable by quarterly instalments. The increase ( £150) "wa s due to the placing on the Boards estimates £SOO for the installation of an electric fire alarm in the borough.—Left to the Council's representatives on the Fire > Board. R. 0. Ellis, for People's Pictures, Ltd., asked permission to carry out the open courts as shown on the plan for a width of sft in lieu of Bft as prescribed by the by-law. It would be noted that ground floor patrons are the only per■sons who will use these courts as exits. —ln view of the Inspector's recommendation, it was moved by Cra Smith and Watkins that the , application be granted, and this was agreed to. A. Weller, Fitzroy, in reference to his application for the carrying away of stormwator through his property, asked that it be made clear that the present nuisance has gradually grown by reason of the increased provision made for diaining that portion of the borough. A remedy was (irgently needed ° The engineer reported having inspected the section, and submitted a sketch. It was decided to inform Mr. Weller that the matter will be considered when the widening of Paynter's Lane and the filling at Mr. Barry's are about to be undertaken. It was decided that the engineer submit a report on the quantity of tar required for re-coating the tram route and all tarred streets within the borough It was agreed to re-metal that portion of Goter Street between Devon Street and Gill Street, and that the engineer report further with regard to remetalling Dawson Street, between V ivian Street and Bulteel Street. L A. Nolan asked that the' Council, while viewing various streets in the Borough, should go into the question of his front entrance, off Paynter's Lane To be considered at a later'date. It was resolved that the Borough Inspector be instructed to see that all footpath crossings which are used for the purpose of cart traffic shall be kept in proper repair by users of the same. With reference to the Frankley Road Settlers' Association complaint as to the state of the Frankley Hill cutting, the engineer reported having interviewed the owner of the land. He found that the bank is now right back on to the' boundary line, and there is no possibility to further slope the latter without trespassing The owner is not prepared to allow any further cutting back unless the land is purchased for the width it will be necessary to encroach and securely fenced. The width required would range from 30 feet at the highest point to about 20 feet.—Crs. Hill, Watkins, and Medley were appointed a sub-committee to inspect the place and report at next meeting. I
