COMFORTS FOR SOLDIERS.
'A CARNIVAL TO BE HELD. j A suggestion was recently made by Mr. F. W. G. McLeocl, to the New Plymouth Patriotic Committee that a week's carnival should be arranged to raise funds' to procure Christmas gifts for soldiers, and on Monday evening a sub-committee met to make preliminary arrangements. Mr. H. Goodacre occupied the chair, and the others present wore Messrs. F. W. G. McLeod, C. Carter. J. Clarke, W, J. Chaney, and C. E. Bcllringer. His Worship the Mayor was appointed chairman, cx offiico. After some discussion, Mr. McLeod agreed to attend to the correspondence section of the secretarial work, and Mr. Chaney agreed to assist him anil Mso to act as treasurer. It was decided to open the carnival week on October 15, and that the various churches be communicated with in connection therewith. Messrs. Goodacre and Bellringer were appointed to control a street demonstration to be held on Monday, October 15, and it was decided to ask the various local bodies to take part in the compel itive procession and displays. An offer from Mi Clarke to take charge ot the snorts section in the afternoon was accepted, and he will report later as to v.'lat should take place in the evenill?. A novelty entertainment to be given by the Citizens' Band and a number of friends will be held on the Tuesday sv«;iii;jf. and Wednesday was allotted to the schools. The head teachers of the tr.vn schools will be asked to arrange for a display, and the chairmen of country school committees will be requested to strange something in their districts if too far away to co-operate with the t-i'vn. J.c was resolved to ask the Jvgamotu seaside committee to arrange foi Thursday, to be "Seaside Bay," under the control of '.he committee. Mr. McLeod reported having interviewed Mr. T. Buchanan (YVaitara) with reference to a visit from the Maori entertainers 011 the Friday evening, and it was suggested that the Maoris be asked also to arrange some attraction for the day generally. Messrs. Carter and Clarke will interview Mrs. Burgess of the Women's Patriotic Committee), and endeavour to arrange frii combined action for Saturday, the concluding day. It was suggested that Saturday be "Rose Day," and as it happens to be Trafalgar Day in addition, it is hoped that the Victoria League will also participate.
