BANK OF ENGLAND RETURNS. Australian-N.Z. Cable Association* , London, August 111. The following are the weekly returns of the Bank of England as issued on Wednesday last:—• Coin anil bullion, £34,505,0001, Reserve, £38,490,000. Proportion of reserve to liabilities, 24.91. Circulation, £30,152,000. Government deposits, £52,301,000. Other deposits, £102,141,000. Government securities, £42,188,000. Other securities, £91,941,000. Short loans, 9% per cent.; three months' bills, 5% per cent. New Zealand 4 per cent., £BB los. LONDON MARKETS. Butter is very dull, buyers holding off as much as possible, owing to the high prices. Danish is rather easier, as the result of a temporary increase in supplies, at about 200s. New Zealand (nominal, pending new arrivals), 180s, c.i.f., being asked for New Zealand September shipments. A few bales are reported at 182s. Cheese.—The market is steady. New Zealand and Canadian, 103s to 104s. The Government's prohibition of export oif rennet has :aused a stoppage. Some parcels were bought for Australian cheese-makers niid agents. The attention of the Agents-general has been directed to the matter. Sugar.—Unchanged. The Bradford wool market shows a healthy tone and more enquiry; 64's, 53d for super, and 52d for common; 60's, 51d; sC's, 30d; 50's, 32y 2 d; 40's, 28d; 40's, 20'/ 2 d. Wheat is quiet and slightly easier. Flour is steady at 49s to 50s. j Peas—Firm and unchanged. Beans—Steady demand. No New Zealand offering. | Oats.—Firm; little offering. New La Plata, spot, 31s 3d. Copper—Spot, £lO9 10s; three montr-s, £lO6 10s; electrolytic, £l3O. Tin.-Spot, £i"o lis 6d; three months, £l7l 12s (id. Lead—Spot, £3l; three months, £3O. Spelter.—Spot. £s2i three months, £43. Silver, 32d. LOAN & MERCANTILE CO.'S REPORT. Tlie New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. (Stratford branch) report as follows: At Stratford on Tuesday, August 15, we had a fair yarding. Springing cows made from £8 to £lO 15s, heifers (close to profit) £7 to £9, backward heifers from £5 5s to £5 17s Od. On the 18th, at Te Wera, there was a medium yarding, with good demand. Store cows made from £7 5s to £S 17s, dairy cows £9 10s to £ll, 2</ s to 3-year steers £9 lis, springing heifers £7 to £lO, yearling heifers up to £3 fls 6d. Our next sale at Te Wera will be held on September 15. On" August 22 we held our usual fortnightly sale in our Stratford yards, when there was a small yarding, owing to the rough weather, but most lines were cleared at full values. Store cows, small and low in condition, made from £-1 10s to £5, better quality £5 12s Od to £7, yearling steers £4 7s 6d to £5 Bs, yearling heifers £3 8s to £3 10s, mixed yearlings (small) £2 ss. In the dairy yards we had a fair entry, with a good demand. Cows made from £lO 2s (id to £l4 10s, backward £7 to £8 10s, heifers (fair quality) £7 5s to £9. Our next Stratford sale will be held on Tuesday, September 5.
We held our usual sale at Tarata on the 25th, when we had a medium yarding and good prices. Store cows made from £1 IDs to £7 lis, according to quality; dairy cows £S to £l] 7s Gd, empty heifers £5, yearling steers £5, yearling heifers £3 to £3 .10s (id. On Saturday, 20th, we held our horse fair at our Stratford yards, when there ■ was a fair entry, but not very many useful horses. Those suitable for farm work and mill; carts met with a failsale at full values. Medium draughts made from £IS to £'2B, harness horses £8 5s to £l7 ss, hacks £4 to £5; unbroken horses, yearlings £5 to £7 10s, 2-j'ear-olds up to £ls; Shetland pony £9 10s. A horse donated 'hy G. A. Treweek, Esq., was sold and re-sold as follows: R. Kidd us, Geo. Bell ss, A. J. Cranton ss, 11. flail ss, E. Wickham 5s J Fawkner ss, Loan and Mercantile ss', Moller ss, J. D. Hcaley 2s Gd, W. MeAloon 2s (id. On August 22 we held our usual wool.! skin and hide sale. We had a fair cata- j logue, containing,loo packages wool, 00E; sheepskins and over 400 hides. Wool: [ Crutehings showed a decline, in sym- [ pathy with other markets, of about 2d per lb, consequently we passed in several lines, as owners' reserves were not obtainable. Apparently the recent highj prices will not be maintained in the near future. Sheepskins in good condition showed a slight advance and were keenly competed for. Hides and calfskins were in good demand, and sold at full market values. The following prices were obtained:—Wool: Mixed fleece, part dead, o'/ 4 d to lO'/id, ordinary lines lid, crutehings B%d to lOd, according to quality and cleanness. Sheepskins: Pelty and short-woollcd 3d to 6%d per lb, heavier skins with fair wool 5%d to S'/ 4 d, good pelts in full wool 10d to lid. Fair butchers' shins, but slightly damp, made up to lO'/.d per II); salted pelts 5s 3d to 7s (Id each. Hides: Settlers', light cowhides 7 7 /sd to B'/,.d, slipy l!'/,,d, yearlings Sd per lb, calfskin, (lleshy) »'/ s d per lb. medium quality lOy.d, well-woolled skins up to Is per l'b; butchers' hides: light, ()%d to 10.(1 per lb; tallow, in tins, 22s 3d to 23s Gd'.' Otu next wool, skin and hide sale will be held on September 19, 1910. Since our last report we have disposed of a considerable amount of stock privately, at the following prices: ■ Dairy herds £l4 14s, i'/s-year steers £8 - 17s ild. yearling steers £5 7s Gd, store cows £0 12s Gd to £7 10s, empty heifers £3, hoggets 20s Gd to 21s 3d, wethers up to 29s Id.
