CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
QUARTERLY MEETING. Members of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce met at the Town Hall on Friday evening, when there were present: Messrs. J. D. Sole (chairman), P. S. Johns, A, McHardy, W. Ambnry, H. Jackson, A. Goldwater, J. Paton, T). R. Morrison, R. C. Hughes, and H. Stacker (secretary). Several apologies for absence were received. The chairman briefly reported on the work that had been done by the Council since the last (the annual) meeting of the Chamber. Mr. H. D. Vickc-ry, secretary of the Association of New Zealand Chambers of Commerce, notified that the next conference would be held in Wellington on Wednesday and Thursday, November 22 and 23. He asked for particulars of subjects for discussion, bo that the resolutions in connection with same could be circulated in ample time among all Chambers. The chairman said there was one matter of very great importance that should be brought up, and that was the Daylight Saving Bill. He would likt to see this matter taken up, also the universal half-holiday. The following remits were framed: "That the principle of the Daylight Saving Bill be adopted," and '"That the matter of a universal half-holiday for the Dominion be again discussed." It was agreed that it other subjects for remits are suggested before October 11th, a special meeting should be called to consider same. Mr. W. Dobson, secretary of the Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce, wrote that his Chamber bad been agitating for some time past to •secure from the postal authorities the restablishment of the old system of publishing monthly addenda cards, giving additions to and deletions from the existing telephone exchange list. The Under-Secre-tary, however, firmly adhered to what he termed the new system, although from the point of view of the general public, so far as Dannevirke was concerned, it bad proved an absolute farce. It could be rendilj understood that in towns where the outlying districts were largely dependent on an up-to-date telephone list, a great amount of inconvenience and unnecessary delay could easily occur through new subscribers not having their name s published in a list foi the month. He asked the Chamber fo- 'support in urging upon the Postmas-ter-General, through the member of Parliament for the district the desirability of reverting to the system of publishing monthly addenda cards. A resolution supporting the desirability of reverting to the publication of monthly addenda cards was agreed to. Mr. R. C. Hughes urged the adoption of a universal system of weights and measures. —The suggestion met with approval, but the meeting considered that the present time was inopportune ti» further the idea.
Tlie chairman Jtated tliat he had heard that the Rarawa was likely to be taken off the New Plyinoutli-Onehunga nil), and, after discussion, lie was delegated to confer with the chairman of the Employers' Association to take any steps necessary to protest against the rumoured change.
