When we reach their trenches they cannot stand bayonets and bombs. Trustworthy officers report that they found the bodies of German sentries tied to posts. One had been beheaded by a shell; presumably this practi ? is in a form of punishment. BRITISH GAIN GROUND, Eeceived August 31, 7.30 p.m. London, August 30. General Sir Douglas Haig reports: We gained ground southward of Martippuich. OFFICIAL REPORT London, August 3fl. General .Sir Douglas Haig reports: The weather is bad. By minor night enterprises we frustrated attempts at'Guillemont and raided trenches at Neuville St. Yaa-st. A German communique says: The enemy at night attacked at Ovillers and Pozieres, and between Guillemont and Maurepas. South of the Somme they prepared to storm and attack, but were held down in the" trenches. We repulsed the English north of Ovillers and at 'Pozieres. Paris, August 30. A communique says: We progressed eastward of FJeury, BELGIAN INDEPENDENCE. Amsterdam, August 30. One hundred and forty-seven Dutch intellectuals have appealed to neutrals to assist in the re-establishing of Belgian independence. If despoiled, it would be a sure source of later wars.
