When we reach their trenches they cannot stand bayonets and bombs. Trustworthy officers report that they found the bodies of German sentries tied to posts. A German communique says: The enemy at night attacked at Ovillers and Pozieres, and between Guillemont and Maurepas. South of the Somme they prepared to storm and attack, but were held down in the" trenches. We repulsed the English north of Ovillers and at 'Pozieres. Paris, August 30. A communique says: We progressed eastward of FJeury, BELGIAN INDEPENDENCE. Amsterdam, August 30. One hundred and forty-seven Dutch intellectuals have appealed to neutrals to assist in the re-establishing of Belgian independence. If despoiled, it would be a sure source of later wars.
