EDUCATION BOARD.

GENERAL MEETING. Hie Taranaki Education Board met yesterday afternoon, the members present being Messrs. B.' Masters, H. Trimble, li. Dixon, S. G. Smith, C. A. Wilkinson, nnd Rev. A. B. Chappell.. The chairman said that the object of the. meeting wag to receive the report of the sub-committee that was set up to investigate into the question of technical and manual education. Unfortunately the report was not quite ready, as they were not in possession of all' (lata they required, and they thought it better to postpone bringing down the report until it was complete, Mr. Wilkinson was of the opinion that members might have teen notified earlier that the report was not ready, and it would have saved country members a long journey. Meetings were becoming too frequent. He thought the chairman should have discretionary power to postpone a meeting. Mr. Dixon thought the matter should be discussed, and something definite arrived at. The Board had valuable men marking time. He thought he could give the information desired from Wanganui, and surely they could get what was wanted from Taranaki, or else there was something radically wrong. After dther members had spoken, it was resolved, on the motion of Messrs. Wilkinson and Smith, that the sub-com-mittee be granted an extension of time to prepare its report, the chairman to call a special meeting when he considered it advisable.

Mr. R. L. Mcllroy, secretary of the Teachers' Institute, asked that the Board would grant the Institute teachers' cheques free of charge. The chairman reported that to grant the request would cost the Board £33 per annum. Mr. Wilkinson moved that the matter be deferred for consideration, and inquiries be made, in other districts as to what practice obtains there. A letter from the Mangatoki School Committee re manual classes, and a request, from Mr. F. w. Sandford for an increase 111 salary, were referred to the committee for manual and technical classes The action of the Auroa and Pukearuhe Committees in closing thflsc schools on account of sickness was confirmed. The election of Mr. H. Morris, to the Toko committee,, vice Mr. Goldup resigned, was approved. A letter was received from the Department with reference to insurances of teachers' residences, and the matter was referred to the committe for regulations.-

The Board confirmed its decision that the administration of the Pariheke school be left in the hands of the Auckland Board. The Defence Department requested the Board's co-operation in the administration of the Military Service Act, wherever possible.—Agreed to. Mr. Barber, Ivoru school, asked for the use of the school reserve of seven acres on which to graze a horse.—lt was pointed out that the reserve was covered with gorse and blackberry, and it was decided to inform Mr. Barber that tlur [Board would consider his request upon | his indicating what he is prepared to do to clear the section. The Department advised that a grant of £G9,j had been made for the re-erec-tion of the Stanley road school and outbuildings. The Whangamomona Committee advised that the schoolgrounds had been laid down in English grass and were now in good order. The cost had been heavier than was anticipated, and they asked for further financial aid!— The committee to be informed that the Board could not see its way to increase its former subsidy of £l2 10s. The Marco road committee .requested the Board to metal the footpaths in the school grounds.—To be offered a subsidy of £1 for £1 up to £5. Applications from Kahui, Tokaora, Te Roti and Auroa committees for certain repairs and alterations were referred to the building overseer to deal with and report.
