HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
' ANNUAL MEETING. The annual mooting of the New Plyniou.h Horticultural .Society, was held in the Town Hall last evening, Mi. J. Gibson, president, being in the chair. Thf.rt was only a moderate attendance of members, severa' apologies for noil*attendance being received. Tlie chairman's report stated tliat the year had been an eventful one, and the war clouds were still hovering over us. It was pleasing to state that amid all the patriotic efi'orts the Society had done its share. They had given £OO lis to patriotic funds— £f> lis to the Belgian and £55 to the Serbian. The balance-sheet was a highly satisfactory one, over £2!) being to credit. This amount, he considered, should be retained, as the time would conic when the plant would have to be renewed. The Society is well supplied with tubes a I'd vases for exhibition purposes. A pleasing feature was that tlie Chrysanthemum Show had improved wonderfully, and it was a credit to New Plymouth growers, and was very satisfactory financially. The committee thanked all for the support accorded during the year, which was pl'ohably a record one. A word of praise is specially due to the secretary, Miss Simson, for her faithful work. The '••Society was extremely fortunate in having such a capable official. Thanks were also accorded the other numerous workers.
Receipts for the year, including £lB 10s 7d carried forward and £3l 5s 'member's subscriptions, amounted to £l2B 10s lOd. The expenditure :mounted to £9B 17s Id, leaving a balance of £2O 13s fid—The report and Lalance-sheet were adopted. The Chief Secretary of the Salvation Army, wrote acknowledging the (Society's donation of fs)to the Serbian Relief Fund. Tlie election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr. .T. Gibson (resleeted); vice-presidents, Mcsdames Burgess, Dockrill. Messrs. C'rooke, H. R. Cattley, J. l'aton, .S. Percy Smith, S. Shaw, C. Denny-Brown, and Colonel Messenger; committee, Mesdames Matthews, Newman, E. Allen, Paton, Morrison, Colvile, Denny-Brown, Ellerm, and McGaiiey, Misses Hempton, Fabian, Curtis, B. Smith, Messrs. L. B. Webster, 1?. Allen, N Allen, E. B. Kingdon, J. Roch, I!. Corney, and G. W. Browne; auditor, Mr. W. C. Weston; secretary, Miss Sim,son (re-elected). Mr Paton proposed that proceeds of all the shows that may be held this year be solely devoted to patriotic purpose;. This was seconded by Miss B. Smith and carried. It was resolved that at least a Spring Show, and a Chrysanthemum Sliow be held during tjie year. On the motion of Mr. Paton a vote of thanks .was accorded by acclamation to the president, secretary, and the other officers, and also to the press.
