FIRE-RAISING AT FOXTON.
SIX FIRES IN A FORTNIGHT. Groat uneasiness and alarm is manifested in I'oxton (says the Maiwwatu Standard) over the continuance of the outbreaks of fire there. After the receipt of anonymous letters by several flaxmillers, mysterious fires occurred ia various mills, and though the damage i;i most cases .was not serious, tlie circumstances were such as to give rise to many forebodings. , A curious feature of tliese obvious efforts at lire-raising is that all 'have occurred about the same time at night, between 10 and 11; Within the past , fortnights lutbreaks in the following places-have beenj'cnorted in Foxton: Mr. King's Haxmill, Noldingluim & Beckett's store, Cordage Company's, mill (two outbreaks), Mr. King's tow shed, Awahou .Company's llaxmill, Mr. R. X. Spiers timber yard. Foxtoi), August 29, Another, of a series of mysterious outbreaks of fire took place at 10.40 tut night, when a large storeroom and ft* contents of Walker & Furrie's business was- totally destroyed. : Tihe building destroyed was situated at the J?ack of a large block in the'main qtreet, and for the almost superhuman efforts of a band of workers the wliple block- would have gone. Fortunately, there was no wind. The outbreak# are baffling to the police, and are the work of incendiaries. The lias no water supply and no fire brigade.
