Mr. J. H. Quilliam received word yesterday that his son, Lieut. Ronald Quilliam, is ill in hospital in France. A cable from Sydney reports the death of Mr. Dan o'llrien, former owner of Carbine, and one time licensee of the Criterion Hotel, New Plymouth. Private VV. A. Marshall (next-of-kin, Mrs. E. Elliott Brougham Street, New Plymouth), has been wounded in the recent fighting in France. A cable from Fremantle announces the death of. Brother Stanslaus, Principal of St. Eldephonsus College, and Provincial of Marist Brothers, of Australasia. Mrs. M. Molloy, of Korito, is in receipt. of a cablegram from her son, Pte. m. Molloy, who was wounded in I'nuice, saying thjjt he i s now convalescent and is having a good time, The appointment of Mr. Edward William Garner, the nominee of the fire insurance companies concerned, to All tho extraordinary vacancies on the New Plymouth and Hawera Fire Boards, caused by the resignation of Mr. F. P. Cork ill, is gazetted. Lance-Corporal J. Sexton, whose name appeared' as wounded in yesterday's Australian casualty list, was well-known in Taranaki some years ago as a runner of marked staying power. HU chief successes were over the half-mile and mile distances. About five years agp he went to Australia, and he enlisted at Sydney at the beginning of the war. Mr. T. H. Moore, who recently underwent an operation to fit himself for service at the front, leaves early next month to enter the non-com. camp. On Saturday afternoon he was presented by Mr. F. Watson, on behalf of Mr. Newton King and staff, with a wristlet watch and tobacco pouch, and also, on behalf of the staff of the machinery and motor-car department, of which he was manager, with a case of pipes. Mr. Moore was also the recipient of a substantial cheque from Mr. King, as a mark of appreciation.

Privata advice lias been received in Phristchurch of the death in action of Captain Erie Maliinson, of the.Yorkshire Yeomanry. Captain Mallinson came to New Zealand about 12 years ago, and, after gaining experience on one or two of the North Canterbury sheep stations, started on his own account at Hillside, White Rock. There lie had considerable success, mid five year ago sold out to go to Western Canada. On the outbreak of war lie returned to his regiment, and after some period spent in training fresh drafts went to France. Late in April he was wounded in the head und face, though not seriously, and also; contracted trench fever. He returned to France after a few weeks' treatment in and was killed early in July. The funeral of the late Mr. Dugald McKellar took place, on Saturday at 'Karori. Among most who. paid their last respects to the. deceased gentleman were the Hon. Sir William Hall-Jones (a former Minister for Marine 1 , Mr. W. 15. Montgomery (Comptroller of Customs), Mr. ltiehard Carter (a formei Collector of Customs), Captain T. Hural.hrics (vice-president of the Wellington branch of the Navy League), Mr. C. W. Falmer (representing the Navy League), and many representatives of shipping and commercial interests and' Government departments. The chief mourners were Captain A. W. McKellar, 1!.N T .E., and Messrs. H, D. and A. C. McKellar (sons), Mr E. V, Law (son-in-luw), and Mr. T. Shailer Weston (nephew of deceased). The casket wa» draped with the Union Jack belonging to the Wellington branch * ■' - Veterans' Association, and tue burial service was conducted by the Bishop of Wellington and the Kev. Mr. Payne.
