' LIQUIDATION REPRISALS, ~ ELEVEN BRITISH FIRMS . AFFECTED, Received August 29, 5.5 p.m. :jAmsterdam, August 20. Herr yon Bethmann Eollweg, German Chancellor, has ordered the liquidation of eleven British firms in Berlin, including the gas works supplying the city, as a reprisal for the liquidation of German firms in England. , . AUSTRIAN MILITARY FIGUREHEAD. HINDENBURG'S ASTUTENESS. Received August 27, 5.5 p.nu Rome, August 26. The Maltirio states that Archduke Charles Francis, the Austrian heir, commands on Field Marshal von Hindenburg'a right, but the position is purely nominal. The Archduke is of feeble intellect, and was never trained for a military career. He merely represents the Austrian throne in the German army, and was chosen by von Hindenburg himself, the astute Field-Marshal knowing the Archduke would not attempt to act on his own initiative.
nTTACKS REPULSED. PROGRESS IN THE BALKANS. Received August 27, 5.5 p.nii London, August 20. A German communique states: We repulsed attacks on the Thiepval-High-wood sector, near Murepas. Five enemy aeroplanes were brought down. We made some progress in the Balkans north-west of Ostrova Lake, Enemy attacks at Moglena were repulsed. GERMAN CONCERN BANKRUPT Received August 27, 5.5 p.m. Berlin, August 28. The Corporation for the Promotion of Commercial Enterprise in German colonies hag been declared bankrupt. The liabilities are 100,000 marks. KING OF BAVARIA HAS A SEIZURE. Zurich, August 26. It is reported that the King of Bavaria had an apoplectic stroke during a reception.
