FOR THE SOLDIERS.

THE RED CROSS MART. LAST SATURDAY'S CONTRIBUTIONS The desire—to reach the £IOOO mark —of those ladies who have so wholeheartedly worked in the cauai? of the Red Cross by holding a "market" every Saturday, was nearly accomplished on on Saturday. When all accounts were made up it was found that only £l2 0s 4d was lacking, and this, it is hoped, will be made up before the end of tha month. ! Saturday was "Bell Block Day," and was the busiest and brightest, viewed from every point, that the Mart has experienced. The Bell Block organised by Mr. and Mrs. Connett, to whom especial thanks are due, rose en masse to the occasion, and they simply poured in gifts of dairy and other pro(luce. Throughout the day the mart lioro a busy appearance, the public patronising it most generously, and at ■0 o'clock the shop was practically deplenished. * " The total takings for the da f amounted to £OO 18s. The Bell Block contribution towards this was - £7O 10s (Id, included in which is £22 10s Gd, which resulted from tile weight-guessing for a sheep, conducted by Messrs. Sole Bros. A very pleasing donation was one of £l4 7s 6d from the ladies of Herbert (Carrington Road), this amount being the result of a eucllra party that was recently held in aid of the fund. The Bell Blqck schoolchildren also forwarded a donation of £l, which they had collected amongst themselves.

Mrs. James Wilson, on behalf of the Red Cross Committee, acknowledges the generous assistance rendered by Mr. and Mrs. Connett and the Bell Block resi«< dents and children, and also desires to thank the ladies of Herbert for their generous donation. To Messrs. SOI9 Bros., and to Misses Hammond and 'Varren, and Mr. H. Street for their indefatigable efforts in selling tickets for the weight-guessing competition an est™ word of praise is due. A number of people who made cash donations are i nlao thanked. . i Next Saturday, will be "Hillsborough Day," and 011 the following Saturday Hie Tarurutangi settlers will "provide (he menu." Other outlying settle-! ments have also promised to fall into line, and the praiseworthy efforts of the lied Cross workers are not likely t» lapse for want of general support. The weight-guessing competition for Mie sheep given by Messrs. Sole Bros, created an extraordinary amount of interest, and was successful beyond precedent,. The exact weig'. t was 122J1b3, and Mr. G. Lock was the successful first ■arize winner. No less than 23 other persons guessed within a quarter of a jpound of the weight, and their names were relegated "to the hat," Miss Maida, Ward (Stratford) being deputed to draw the tickets, and Messrs. W. Ambury and Ous Sole were scrutineers.. Prizes resulted: 2nd, Mis* Ada Sullivan; 3rd, F. H. Jellyman; 4th, W. Mo Kenzie; Bth, W. Pratt; oth, R. Heard; 7th, R. Crocker (Bell Block); Bth, Mra. Bridgman; 9th, K. Webster. All the prizes, with the exception of the third onp, which wa,s g'iven by Messrs. Webster Bros., were donated by the Messrs. Sole. Mows, McKenzie and Pratt handed over their prices to the benefit oi the fund.
