MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 2-t. | (Before Mr. L Crooke, S.M.< WANDERING CATTLE. On the information of the county inspector, for whom Mr. J. H. Quillian'i appeared, Thomas Wilding was charged with allowing a mare and foal to wan dor on the Kenwood road on August 5. Defendant pleaded guilty, but after hearing counsel's opening statement that the case was a bad one and that defendant had been repeatedly warned, Willing altered his plea to one of not guilty. C. D. Grant, county inspector, gave evidence as to warning defendant, and to the repetition of the offence. He had told Willing that he must prosecute. Defendant said that the animals belonged to his son, who was at the front, and he did not see why he should be charged. He admitted being warned by the inspector. A fine of 20s. and costs 2Ss, was imposed, fourteen days being allowed in which to pay. BREACHES OF BOROUGH BY-LAWS. Joseph Brough was charged with allowing a 'horse to wander on Xgamotu Reserve, contrary to the borough bylaws. There was no appearance of defendant. The inspector (Mr. B. Tippins) did not press for a heavy penalty, stating that he believed the offence was purely accidental. Convicted and order ed to pay costs, 7s. E. A. Elliott, charged with riding a motor-cycle and side-car in Egmont street without having lights attached, did not appear. Fined 5s and costs 7s. Wm. Leonard McCnllum did not appear in answer to a charge of being the owner of an unregistered dog. I!. Tippins deposed to having interviewed de fendant several times, and to being told that the dog was registered at Eltham Defendant was warned to put the collar on the dog, but had not done so, and enquiries made at Eltham revealed that the dog was not registered there. Defendant had abused witness, and threatened to pull his nose. Fined 10s, and costs 7s.
Philip Pereival pleaded guilty to driving a motor-car at a greater speed than allowed when turning from Devon street into Currle street. Fined 10s and costs Ts. | Tiros. Ned did not appear on a charge of leaving a motor-cycle and side-car on the footpath in C'urrie street, thereby obstructing flic trallic. , The borough inspector gave evidence, and a fine of os and costs lis as imposed. Kupi Wareaha, charged with a similar offence to the above, was also absent. He was mulcted in the same penalty. Albert Heflord pleaded guilty to leaving his motor-ear on the taxi-stand in Currie street without yroper attention. Convicted and ordered to pay Court costs, 7s. W. B. iPaton, on a s ; milar charge, was also convicted and ordered to pay costs. 'Peter C. Hoskin, charged with driving an express and two horses about (>.45 p.m. on August'l4, without proper lights, pleaded guilty, and was fined 5s and 7s costs. AX TJXRULY CADET. Charlie West was :hargcd with failing to render personal service in not amending drill. Sergt.-Major Williamson gave evidence that the case was a very bad one, six consecutive parades having been missed. The lad was employed in the post and telegraph office. A fine of £1 and costs 7s resulted.
