IN THE EAST.
A BRILLIANT FEAT. ATTACK IN THE SWAJfPS. THE ENEMY OVERTHROWN. Received August 21. 10 p.m. Petrograd, August 20. The Russk-oe Slovo's correspondent, describing the Russian capture of the Eliadkizebroff position, states that it was the most brilliant in the history of the war. Tlie enemy trenches, extending over low hills between the Sereth and the Tarnopol and Lemberg railway, were plated with iron and like a knight's armor, with massive earthen parapets, covered with a solid layer of ferroconcrete. The position was also protected on the left flank by a chain of reedy lakes and marshes. . The Russians surprised the enemy with a night attack, where the swamps were least penetrable. The Russians worked their way across the reed beds in complete darkness, floundering in the mud and jumping from tuft to tuft. Suddenly a searchlight and star shells lit the scene, and shrapnel and machineguns swept the entire swamp. The attackers were hidden, but the swaying rushes disclosed the movements to the gunners. The Russians pressed on in spite, of the heavy losses, formed groups on firm ground, and charged the Austro-German lines with the bayonet during the first light of morning. A stubborn fight ensued. The enemy brought up all Iris available reinforcements, but nothing checked the Russian 'impetus. Two German regiments "were i practically exterminated. The Russians' victory, combined with General Lechitsky's advance at Stanislav, compelled General von Bothmer to fall back on the Zlota Lipa line.
