LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A meeting is to be held in the Soldiers' Club rooms, King Str.et, at 7.30 this evening, when all returned and final leave soldiers are particularly requested to endeavor to attend. We have to acknowledge receipt, from the children of the Lincoln Ro d school, of the sum of £2 5s for t'he Red Cross Fund, and we shall have pleasure in handing over the amount to the treasurer of the fund. Some delay was occasioned in opening proceedings at the annual meeting of suppliers of the Eltham Dairy Factory on Saturday, owing to the payment of bonus cheques to suppliers. Nnfturally the recipients did not grumble, but pocketed their cheques and probably had a desire that bonus day should appear more frequently. The takings of the Red Cross 'Mart on Saturday amounted to the fine total of £l9 17s, and tile ladies still have a pure-bred "Pukekura" Irish terrier for which they desire a purchaser. Next Saturday will be Bell Block Day at the mart. That is to say the mart will be fully provisioned by the ladies of the Bell 'Block district, whilst local ladies will have charge of the selling thereof.
The Patriotic Flower Cart realised £lO on Saturday, and this amount will bo devoted to the fund in aid of the Belgian children. It is the intention of tlie Women's Patriotic Committee to continue the sale of flowers for patriotic purposes each Saturday, as long as the spring flowers last, and they will welcome donations of flowers for this purpose. The raffle for the doll's house has been postponed until next Saturday evening. In a letter to his parents, Private John Walsh, of Bawhitiroa, a member of the 10th Reinforcements, states that he is very close to the firing line. He mentions he was feeling lonely and longing for a glimpse of Taranaki when he and others were told off to unload .some trucks. The railways run these provision trains as close as safety warrants to the front, and then the soldiers do the carrying. Imagine his surprise when his first parcel was a box of Mangatoki butter, then a Kiiupokonui cheese, and he finished up with Waitara beef. Handling these goods brought Taranaki ever so much nearer, and for a while the work was nearly as 'interesting as receiving a lotted
A cable message from Melbourne states that tlie e.vport of inferior butter 'lias been permitted.
A London cable states that the Prince, of Wales Fund lias nearly reached six millions. More than half of this amount has been distributed.
A Sydney cable states that tho State Commandant inspected the New Zealand Mounted Rifles. They were enthusiastically received, their fine appearance impressing the onlookers. At a meeting of the directors of the Taranaki Farmers' Mutual Insurance Association, held at Eltham on Thursday night, it was resolved that tlio Association should take up Government Joan bonds with all the uninvested money they have at present. That at least one Hospital Board appreciates the value of the work of ita stall' was shown in Palmerston North the other day, when the local Board voluntarily raised the salaries of its thirdyear nurses to ;C(!0 a year. The opinion was voiced tli»t the nurses deserved all they got.
The trustees of the Inglewbod Foresters Lodge have decided to invest £OOO in the War loan. -\*o less than thirty members of the lodge have gone, to the front, and the trustees are to he commended in thus financially assisting the war fund, an example which it is expected' other Taranaki lodges will follow.
