DOROTHEA SPINNEY,
"Ah, but a man's aim should exceed his
grasp, Oh what's a heaven for?" —Browning. In such times as these it is needful to keep in touch with the masterpieces of art. No opportunity of doing so should be allowed to slip by, for if a nation has no high standard of beauty it sinks into degradation; beauty gives strength and help. Dorothea Spinney is he/e to give her recitals. To speak of this artist, one sentence uttered by one of her audience lately, who lias travelled and been in personal touch with the finest artists on the Continent, expresses hor powers: "One associates her, in thought, with such actresses as Rejane, Bernhardt and Ellen Terry, yet could one of these alone, stripped 1 of all accessories, hold
her audience enthralled by a masterpiece that is restrained and over two thousand years old, and eliminate her own personality? Dorothea Spinney begins her work here to-night in the Good Templar Hall with a popular programme, The box plan is at Collier's.
