v.—_f | GORIZIA BETWEEN TWO FIRES. DAZED PRISONERS ARRIVING. FUhTOUS FIGHTING EASTWARD. EVERY INCH CONTESTED.. Received august 17, U. 5 p.m. Rome, August 17. Prisoners arc still arriving at Gorizia, trembling, dazed and suffering from th; terrible effects. of battle. Gorizia is still under the trajectory of opposing batteries, there being a terrific hurricane of shells at times. This, however, is nothing to the actual fighting and scenes eastward of the town, where oattalion after battalion comes into close touch with the enemy. Every inch of the ground is being hotly contested, 'and furious band to hand encounters. Thickly-armoured cars also dash to within a few feet of the enemy lines and pour an enfilading machine-gun fire. ENEMY TRENCHES TAKEN. RAILWAYS BOMBED. Rome, August IC. An Italir.n communique says: We captured the enemy trenches at Mont PcI'ina and areas at San Caterina and San Marco. Our air squadron dropped 2'/ 3 tons of explosives on railway establishments near Proatina and Dornberg. The machines ictunied safely.
