- .. MR. HUGHES' VIEWS. r . GERMANY BLEEDING TO DEATH. ' yiCTORY MEANS MORE MEN. r , v. 1 * Melbourne, August 15. J Speaking at his reception, Mr. Hughes said:— > "We have 100,000 troop 3on the Western front. Although the Allies' recent r success is a sign that the tide has turned, 1 nothing justifies the belief that a de- ? cisive victory is at hand. I believe that , a decisive victory for the enemy is impossible, hut that does not necessarily j ensure that the victory is with us. "After two years' war Germany's great . strength is not sapped, and the end will [' not be in sight until 3ermany has been driven out of France, Belgium and j Russia. We must conquer, yet cannot , prolong the war indefinitely. Germany , is bleeding to death, but so ai'u the > Allies. The only (ray to secur? victory t . hto pour more men into the field. 'lf Germany is not beaten decisively i those responsible for the crimes committed cannot be punished as outraged civilisation demands." Mr. Hughes concluded: "Our duty is clear, and whatever is necessary will be done bj*the people of Australia. I shall do my" duty, no, matter I Dlease or displease."
