TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Tlie principal topic of the week is tiie Canterbury Grand National meeting, which opens on Tuesday, and will be continued on Thursday, and concluded on Saturday. Filial payments for the principal events should appear this morning, and though not available at time of writing, it can be safely saiu that the lists will be very satisfactory ones.

Practically all the acceptors are already at headquarters, but training operations at' Kiccarton during the week have not been very exciting, owing to unsettled weather, rain and snow rendering the tracks very sloppy. Naturally the displays over big country have been of the careful order, though Ngatoa has been fencing boldly. Braeburn, Tarero, Heatherica, Ne\v York, and Captain Mackay have all jumped safely. Of the hurdlers, Marconi, Master Regal, Styrax, and Sleight of-Hand have been shaping as well as anything. On Tuesday the fortieth New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase will come up for decision. The Winter Cup is :«lso run the same day. On Thursday, the Grand National Hurdle Race, Beaufort Steeplechase, and August Handicap will be the principal atractions, and 011 Saturday, the Lincoln Steeplechase Sydenham Hurdles, and Heatiieotc Handicap will supply the thick end of the fund. As usual, a large number of Taranaki sports have left to witness the premier jumping gathering of the year.

This week's "Referee" contains the season's statistics, which always make interesting reading. For the third year in succession, the Martagon horse Martian heads the list of winning sires. His tofal is £17,75(1 10s, but that does not include the winnings of Reputation, Cherubini, and others of his stock in Australia. Bee, Nones, Adjutant, Ardenvhor, Sasanoff, Warstep, Snub, and Battle Eve have been Martian's best winners iii the Dominion. In seven years, Martian's progeny lmve won 73,0011. All Black, who had nine winners of placed money, is second on the list with £12,973, of which Desert Goid won two-thirds. Egypt and Croesus also stored well for the Hawke's Bay horse. Boniform is oifce more prominent with £901!), one-half of which stands to the credit of Eligible. The defunct Soult is fourth with £8770. and then follow: Multifid £77(10, Finland £7732, Charlemagne IT. £7553, Varco £7025, Lupin CG455, Hymettus £5743, Achilles £SOOO, Calibre £5150, and Spalpeen £5120. Maniapoto's stock won £4107 10s, and Coronet £3584 10s, Sylvia Park £3513, and Campfire £2741, are well up. It was a foregone conclusion at an early stage of the racing year that Mr. T. 11. Lowry would head the list of winning owners, but few considered that lie would go up to £17.224, which he did by the aid of Desert Gold, Balboa, Tete-a-Tete. Egypt, and Bjorneborg. His winnings make the previous best look very paltry. There is a big drop to the second winning owner, Hon. J, 1). Ormond, whose horses won £7105. Then closely follow: (,'. Stvad"~£7&lQ l Sir Geo. Clifford £0079, (.J. D. Greenwood £5220, A. B. Williams £4315, 11. Han•ion £4225, G. L. Stead £4049, and "Mr. Highden" £3721. Lower down the list we find: .1. Fryer £lt!2o, A. Alexander £1330 and .T. George £IOOS. The bulk of the stakes were divided by the two cracks, Desert Gold and Eligible. The' former mopped up £8350, which easily tops the previous best, and Eligible scored a very neat £4505. Balboa took £2(540, Horke's Drift £2530, El Gallo £2310, King Lupin £2240, Chortle £1905, Tete-aTete £1940, Bee £1894, Mullingar £IB3O, Puweflller £lßls, Egypt £1705, and the New Zealand Cup winner, Tangihou, £1755. The best Taranaki winner was Welcome Nugget, whose efforts resulted in £1525 coming to the province. Rewi Poto £1057, Bisogne £B9O, King Chiara £B9O. Astor £BOO, Avon I'ark £0(18, Crawford £OOS. Depredation £OOO, Veto £035, Maniaroa £Ol5, Ineuru £545, Glenrov £540, Styrax £533, Play-Off £335, and other lesser lights show up well on the lists. When Corrie won the Hurdle Race at Rosellili on July 22, she, carried 11.5, started favorite, and scored nicely in the hands of R. MeSeveny "Alky" Ward is mentioned as Glenmore's most likely pilot at the Grand National meeting. That is if the Marton horse has recovered sufficiently from the mishap to his shoulder to be able to start.

Marton is going along liicely at Wanganui, and if the field in the Dunnevirke Steeplechase is not too select he 'will carry a lot of Wanganni money.
