TRAMWAY FATALITY.

AN OLD MAX KILLED. .A sad accident occurred at ttl§ junction of Cutheld liuad and Belt Road last isijflit, just about 0 o'clock. As the tramcar from the Breakwater (in charge of Motorman J. Twohill and Conductor Walker), was approaching tho corner an old man was obsen .1 to cross the footpath towards the line. Repeated warnings were given, but were unheeded. Deceased appeared dazed, :ind stood on the line, apparently uncertain whether to go forward or not. The motorman applied the emergency brakes, but just as he did so the matt lurched, and the car struck him heavily, throwing him to the side of the track.

The police were immediately telephoned for, and Constable Blaikie and ,i>. Wade were quickly on the scene, but life was extinct.. The body was removed to the morgue, and an inquest will be held this afternoon.

From papers in deceased's pockets it is assumed that the victim of the unfortunate accident is John Hawke, of Mangnrei, an old-age pensioner, who came into town yesterday morning t(j draw his usual monthly allowance.
