MOUNT EGMONT

A NEW TELESCOPE. A new telescope is being made "by Mr. Ward, of Wanganui, for the North Egmont Mountain Kouse. The following is a description of it, as supplied by Mr. Ward:—A powerful telescope, mounted on a strong tripod stand, giving easy movements in altitude and azimuth The telescope is furnished with raekworth focussing gear, and will magnify 40 by 80 diameters. It has an eyepiece for viewing all terrestial objects, bringing all to the eye onefortieth of the actual distance. It has also an astronomical eyepiece of 80 diameters for viewing the moon, planets, the sun, as well as the stars and nebulae, and this should prove a great attraction to visitors, as situated at an altitude of 3140 ft above sea-level, the air on all fine evenings is so much more suitable for observation on the celestial bodies, and it is for this reason that all the best astronomical is being done nowadays in observatories situated upon the summits of mountains ranging from 4CoOft to 0000 ft. '■ The hostel is being fairly well patronised during the winter months by visitors anxious to get amid the snow. On several occasions snow has come further down than the house.
