Word wa.s received by Mr. Pepperell. of Vogoltown, last night that his son Laurie had been killed in action. The deceased soldier was one of the original members of the Vogeltown Boy Scouts.
Tlie following names have appeared in recent casualty lists as wounded and admitted to hospital: Gunner W. IT. Franks, Riverlea; Private A. I!. Wiles, next-of-kin ,J. V. Burrough, New Plymouth; Private W, W. Evans, Matau.' Mr. F. D. Tloldsworth, who retired some months ago' from the position of chief postmaster in Auckland, has been appointed director of postal services and attached to Headquarters. Xow Zealand Expeditionary Force. He has been granted the temporary rank of major.

The death is announced from Christchurch of John'Ronnie, who passed nwiiy on Sunday morning at the age of 7(1. He was a resident of Doyloston and for many years took a keen interest in publil alfaii's. especially in education. He was n well-known breeder and importer of prize stock.—Press Association. Private Xormnn Pirau Batley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Batley, of Mo'awhango, was killed in action on July 10. Tie was engaged for some years in farming pursuits on his father'* stations in the Mokau and Awakino districts, and made many friends there and in other parts of the province, who will deeply i egret the death of such'a fine stamp of a man as Private Batley proved himself to be. Private Alfred Lee Dixon, who was killed in action on July 3, was the son of Mrs. 11. Dixon, Whangnrei, and resided in Xew 'Plymouth until seven years ago. He entered the Borough Council ollice here as a cadet, and after a few years was appointed town clerk at Whangavoi. whore he resided until 'he volunteered for service abroad. Private Dixon wns one of the most popular men wherever he went, and the deepest sympathy will be felt for his bereaved mother.
