A DANGEROUS CORNER.

REMOVED BY EXPLOSION. All motorists are aware of a most dangerous spot known as Marsh's corner, on the Junction Road, Lower Mangorei.' it was the scone of the fatal motor accident on March 3rd, when Mrs. Walker lost her life. Negotiations had taken place between the Taranaki County Council and Mr. \V. A. Marsh, the owner of the property, with a view to improving the spot, but without result. .Yesterday morning a rumbling noise was heard by some of the settlers, who thought it was a mild shock of earthquake. Their minds were, however, set at rest early in the morning, when it was found that during the night some person or persons had put in a small tunnel from each side of the corner, and with explosives had blown away the corner without cost to the Council or the sanction of Mr. Marsh. The -perpetrators of this ,>icet! of engineering is unknown. No damage to anyone resulted. It is hoped the work begun will be completed amicably between the Council and Mr. Marsh.

The explosion was highly successful, and during the day the county road men were engaged in carting away the debris. It is said that about 50 yards of earth was shifted.

.Motorists who use the road frequently consider that a considerable improvement has been effected, and that the expenditure of a further £2 would very much improve the corner. The disturbance must have been a vpry violent one, as some of the earth was distributed along the road a distance of 100 yards. A lamp placed on the corner after the discovery of the upheaval gave warning to early morning travellers that an alteration had taken place. No dilUcnlty was : experienced by motor cars in negotiating the corner prior to the removal of i the spoil.
