NURSES' SALARIES.
A COMPARISON. When enquiring into the petition by lourtl) year nurses at the New Plymouth Hospital for an increase of salary, the House Committee decided to instruct the secretary to obtain schedules of salaries paid to nurses by the Auckland. Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, iPalmerston North, Wanganui, Hamilton and Timaru hospitals. At yesterday's meeting replies were received as follows: Auckland, first year £lO, second year £2O, third year £25, fourth year £45; sisters, first year £BO, second year £9O, third year £IOO (uniforms supplied). Christchurch: £l3, £25, £4O; at the rate of £52 per annum for first six months of four years, £OO for second six months; sisters, £7O, £75, £SO, £BS. rising thereafter by yearly increments of £5 to £IOO. Dunedin: £2O. £'2s, £3O, £10; sisters, £6O, £7O, £SO; night sister, £BS (no uniforms supplied). Palmerston, North: £l2, £24, £3O, and staff nurses £6O; sisters, £75 to £95. Wanganui. £2O, £25, £3li, and staff nurses £SO; sisters, £7O, £BO, £OO. Timaru: £ls, £2O, £25 (uniforms to all). Replies have not yet been received from Wellington or Hamilton. It was pointed out that the salaries at New Plymouth were: First year nurses £l2, second £24, third £3li, fourth £4B, fifth £(I0 ; sisters £75 to £9O; night sister £9O. ' The average at the other hospitals was: First year £ls, second £l9, third £3O, fourth £46. At the majority of these hospitals no allowance was .nade for uniforms, so that the, fourth year nurses here were considerably better off than elsewhere.
