CAPTURE OF LONGUEVAL.
AN ARTILLERY TORNADO. A VIVID DESCRIPTION. Received July 17, 10.30 p.m. London, July 17. The Daily News' correspondent states: Our bombardment preceding the capture of Longuovsil and Uazentin was the most stupendous yet seen. A wonderfully appalling belt of flame fringed the great arc of the horion and the noise was terrific far over to the left, and also in the region of Ovillers and La Boiselle. It was like a volcano in violent eruption. The British offensive thus far has been over ground uphill, not steeply nor always perceptibly. If we can"enthrone ourselves on the high ground between the big wood and Martintuich we will dominate the enemy positions. A SIGNIFICANT ANNOUNCEMENT. NO MORE GERMAN MAPS. OWING TO RECENT DEVELOPMENTS. Received July 18, 12.30 a.m. London, July 17. A most significant announcement is made by the semi-official Cologne Gazette to the effect that it is of little use to publish maps giving the position of the liues, because they are so elastic and are repeatedly changing in detail, therefore, no reliable picture can be produced. This is remarkable, as the German papers have hitherto published detailed maps. The British Press Bureau, on the contrary, has supplied a photographic reproduction map of the German positions ca.ptured. It is complete to the smallest detail. IN THE EAST. NEW RUSSIAN RAILWAYS. AUSTRIAN'S AS HARVESTERS. Copenhagen, July lfi. J The Russians have decided to construct 65 new railways, 1-11,000 kilometres in length. Half a million Austrian .prisoners have gathered the enormous Russian harvest in the southern districts. AN EXPLODED FICTION. PRISONERS MOSTLY GERMANS. London, July 16. Mr. Washburn, writing from the Kovel jfiont, says that more than half the 42,000 captures here are Herman, disisipating the Action of German invincibiljity against the Russians. Although the [Germans are constantly adding guns and J machine-guns, they find difficulty in fillj ing the human blanks, while the Russian ] depots are jammed with reserves and j there are plenty of rifles, excluding 300, 1000 captured during the offensive. The weather is intensely hot, many of the captures being due to exhaustion. It is impossible for such fighting to continue long without breaking the German line. ! GERMAN REPORT, London, July 16. A German communique says: The Russians unsuccessfully counter-attacked our line in the region of Skrobowa, which Prince Leopold captured. General Linsingen is counter-attacking southwestward of Lutsk. AUSTRIAN PEACE FEELERS. Reuter Service. Loudon, July lfi. The Morning Post's correspondent at Petrograd says the departure of the Council of Ministers for Imperial headquarters is much commented on. There is a strong feeling in influential quarters tha.t when Austria again issues feelers for a separate peace they should be welcomed by the Allies, also that the time has come for tile Allies to agree on the basis of future peace terms. RUSSIAN SUCCESS IN CAUCASUS. TURKS PUT TO FLIGHT. Received July 17, 8.20 p.m. London, July 10. Official: In the Caucasus we penetrated to the town of Baiburt, the Turks .hastily retreating westward and destroying iheir store*. AUSTRIAN REPORT. Received July 17, 0.35 p.m. London, July 16. An Austrian communique states: We repulsed Russian attacks near Luczina, in Bukovina. Violent fighting progresses south-west of Luck. RUSSIAN ADVANCE NEAR RIGA. Received July 17, 8.20 p.m. : London, July 10. A Russian communique states: On the right flank of our Riga positions we advanced in the region westward of ICemmem, YOU REMEMBER THE TASTE OP RUSSETA CIDER. Because it's so delicious! It's pure, too, made from the juice of rosy-cheeked apples and cane sugar. Stores and hotels everywhere sell ij. Ask for it. KEEP YOUR BOWELS REGULAR. As everyone knows, the bowels are the sewerage system of the body, and it is of the greatest importance that they move once each day. If your bowels become constipated, take a dose of Chamberlain's Tablets just after supper, and they will correct the disorder. They will keep you healthy by keeping your bowels regular.
