It was announced at the Anglican Synod that a legacy of CIOOO had been left to the Anglican Boys' Home Society.

Despite the war, the revenue from the Napier tramway continues to increase. During June it was £4B more than for the corresponding period of last year. The date for the entraining of the New Plymouth quota of the 10th Reinforcements is Monday, July 24, and not Friday 21. The New Plymouth Coursing Club's meeting which was fixed for July 20, has been postponed till July 27, owing to the former d".te dashing with the Wanganui meeting.

Gooaman, Mangere, several Christmas plum trees bearing ripe fruit of full size and good quality. At his dispersal sale on Wednesday, Mr. E. J. Linn, of Normanhy, generously gave a pedigree yearling Jersey bull for the benefit of the T!ed Cross funds. The little animal realised twenty-nine guineas, and was purchased by Mr. Pierce, of Denbigh road, Hawera. Messis. .T. S. Connett, Morton, Murdoch, Marx, Powdrell and Forsyth are in Wellington for the purpose of interviewing the Premier in regard to the sale of the cheese output; to the Imperial Covernment and probably will arrive at some filial decision in the matter.

The farmers of the Ashley district (Canterbury) report that the country has made a wonderful recovery from the drought of the summer. The grass lands are in particularly good order, and the autumn sown crops are doing very well indeed. There is not so much cropping being done this year as hist; but both the wheat and outs have come away well. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, Alfred Ireland was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, in that he was found, at !),30 p.m. the previoiH evening, by Constable Naughton on the premises of a widow at Moturoa without lawful' excuse. Accused who pleaded not guilty, was convicted and ordered to come lip for sentence within six months, it being understood that he leaves the town at once.

The Aliens' Commission opened its sitting at Dargaville yesterday. The members are Messrs •!. \Y. Poynton, S.M. (Palmerston North), and George Elliot (Auckland). The chairman (Mr. Poynton) explained that the commission had been sent to inquire into the alien question. The police and other witnesses spoke favorably of the Austrians' behaviour and and did not favor their internment. The commission is still sitting. The Court of Appeal yesterday delivered its decision in the case Commissioner of Stamps v. Begg and another. The Court was unanimous in dismissing the appeal, holding, as did .Judge Chapman, in the Supreme Court, that the gift by the children to their mother of an annuity was not a consideration for the prior gift by her of her shares in Charles Begg and Co.. Ltd., to her children. Costs vrerc allowed respondents on the highest scale and as from a distance.

A meeting of the Committee of tha New I'lymouth Life-Saving Club was held tlii> week, Mr. I). J. Hughes presiding. Correspondence was read from tile Dominion executive of the R.L.S.S. relative to the formation of a head centre of the Society in New Plymouth, and it i r.is unanimously decided to hold a meeting of all persons interested in swimming, on Friday, August 4, for the speeiol purpose of establishing a North Taranaki centre. The New Plymouth official time-table and guide to the town and district will be 011 sale at the leading booksellers or the publishing office (Daily News) next week. The booklet is of a handy vest pocket size, and contains, as well as I lie tram time-table, particulars of the train services, motor 'bus services. and information, as to the places of attraction and interest in and about the town. It will bo sold for a penny, and should be in the possession of every resident.

Mrs. MacKenzie, New Zealand representative of Ramabai's Mission to the child widows of Tndia, will next week conduct, a sale of work similar to tlie one held here two years ago. Slie Drings with her a large stock of Eastern goods and novelties. This year, will be added produce and afternoon tea stalls. These latter will he under the supervision of the local branch of the Red Cross Society. and a request is hereby made for donations of produce and refreshments for these stalls. Half of the profits are to be devoted to the Red Crogs funds, and it is hoped that the sale will be as well patronised a.g 011 former occasions.

The Saturday matinee at the Empire Picture Palace will commence at 2 o'clock sharp instead of 2.30 as previously. Doors open at 1.30. A particularly tine film by the Edison Company heads the new programme for Saturday at the "Empire." The title is "Oladiola," and the chief role is played ly Mis.-; Viola Dana, whAse work is already well known in this town. Some of the rural farm scenes are faithfully worked into the picture, and they alone are well worth seeing. The story is one that appeals more to the gentler'sex, although it should not tie missed by anyone who is fond of a good motion-picture drama. A film which will create .great interest at the present time is one depicting the manufacture of shells and i'lnmimitioi; for the big guns in England and Franco.
