In the Auckland Supreme Court Alfred Clarence Mitchell, who committed bigamy by going through the form of marriage with a girl he met in the registry ollice, was sentenced to eighteen months' hard labor. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, before Mi. A. Crooke, S.M., judgment for plaintiff, in default of defendant, was given in the case Taranaki County Council v. Leonard Taylor, a claim for £2 17s with 13s costs. The Ironfounders' Association wired the Hesketh Company yesterday that it would be unable to send representatives to witness a demonstration of the ironsand smelting process until the 24th. Arrangements have been made to fall in with the Association's request. The Tarauaki Agricultural Society's linancial position has completely changed for the belter during the last yeai. Commencing with a debit balance of £tKX), the Society now has in view a credit balance of £3OO. The winter show profits, about £ISU, well exceed last year's result. In large measure this progress is due to the untiring efforts of the chairman (.Mr. J. S. Connett) in securing 700 new members this year, and also £SOO in special prizes. The paidup membership is now 9CO, and there are still about another hundred whose subscriptions it is hoped will Soon be furthcoming. During the current week a '•'refresher" class fgr teachers is being held hi the Central School gymnasium. There are about ">0 teachers and pupil teachers in attendance, drawn from us far as Hurlord lload, Kuiniii'o and Lepperton. t The monthly meeting of eummittee of I tin Society fur the Prevention of Cruelty |to Animals was held yesterday in the Mayor's room. Present: The Mayor, Mesdnmes Colvile and Denny-Brown, Rev. Colvile (in the chair), Messrs Webster, Moyes, Paton, Samlford, and Hughes (secretary). A letter re transport of sheep on the railway was referred to the police. It was resolved to ask the l!nn>ugli Council to grant a free pass to the Society's inspector when travelling on their business. Subscriptions were received from Mrs. Courtney ?s 3d, Mes-rs lack-o.i and Paul ">s, Dr Fookcs ."is, Mr Ryder ."is. The treasurer reported a balance of £ti lis 2d. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning Mr. A. After reviewin.;; the evidence, the magistrate said it was not disputed that the measure of the damage was the loss of profit on the butter-fat from the milk supplied | by defendant to the Oxfoid Road factory from March 8 to April 19, which amounted to approximately 4301b?. .Plaintiff had estimated his profit at \U] per lb of cheese, and this, talcing lOOlbs nf Imttevi'at us equal to i'lOlbs of cheese, .could give a lu" :if £2 .is on the -1301b s of butter-fat. Judgment was given accordingly, with costs amounting to £2 7s. A meeting of the Central School committee was held last night. Mr. S. G. Smith presiding. The headmaster's (report stated that the average attendance for the two weeks was 0'21i.7 out nf » roll of UIO. Fourteen pupils were admitted and six had left. There was , still a considerable amount of sickntss about. The average attendance at Vogcltown for the quarter was ,'M out of .19. The east wing of the Central School had been thoroughly disinfected Mr. Uoydhouse. inspector of physicul culture, had visited the school and given valuable instruction to the staff. At the suggestion of Mr. Kendall thp chairman wa s authorised to act in all cases deemed necessary for securing the health of the children at the school. The Royal Pictures management has secured a number of exceptionally big feature pictures for the next few months, and tu make room for the first attraction this week it has been found necessary to show the last three epiI sodes of the popular serial, "Trey o' , Hearts," to-morrow (Thursday) night. Followers of this interesting series will (U. well to note that Thursday night will be the only opportunity to view the picture. The episodes to be screened are 13th. "The Flooded Mine," 14th, "Judith's Heroism," and 15th and final episode, "The tast Trump."
A special meeting of the Taranaki County Council was lu;l<l yesterday morning to decide upon the rates to be levied lor the year from April 1, 1 y 10, to March 31, 11)17. It was decided that the same rates lie struck as for last 'year: —Moa riding: General rate of 1 in the C over area of Aloa road district; Moa outlying district I'/gd, Mangorei riding: General rate of I%J. Waitara riding: (leueral rate of l%d over area of Waitara West road district; and a general rate of 2'/ s d over the outlying district. Omata riding: (leneral rate of l%<\. Okato riding: General rate of iy 3 d over area of the Okato road district, and a general rate of l%d over the outlying district. At the close of the vice-regal reception in the Manaia Octagon last .week, his Excellency the Governor mentioned that lie had that morning' visited Pa:ihaka, and immediately added, not without some degree of pride., that lie was the lirst Governor of New Zealand ivho had visited the once-famous Maori stronghold (reports the Witness.) Mr. John Hunt remarked that one of his predecessors had been there. Earl Onslow had at one time come through and visited Parihaka. The Governor smiled and shook his head incredulously. Mr. Hunt, however, was unconvinced. "Well," said the Governor, with affable good humor, 'T asked Lord Onslow before he died if lie had been there, and he said he had not." That settled the gentle controversy. The Triangle feature drama "The Coward'' will be shown for the last time at the Theatre Royal to-night. A recruiting drama, by the London Film Company, heads the new programme at the Empire to-night. The Melbourne, Ltd., has opened out a fine lot of boys' and youths' warm dark tweed overcoats all double-breasted, belted, and with storm straps. These coats are mighty fine value and are just at the present moment very scarce. Prices 21s to 2te !)d, sizes 8 to 16 years.
