OPUNAKE.
■ (Frow our own Correspondent.) At the Town Board meeting n letter was received from the Egmont County Council suggesting that as the Opunake seaside was increasing hi popularity the site where the late Geo. Dobbie met his death should be fenced off as a necessary safeguard i" the interest of strangers visiting the seaside. The board had at a previous meeting decided against erecting a protection fence. It was decided to obtain an estimate of the cost. The objection ihe majority had to fencing was that it was a big order, as the whole of the crescent is similarly dangerous. _ , Mr. A. J. Bremian. who was injured through an explosion of carbide gas. is a°ain about. The accident, happened through taking a lighted match to obtain carbide from the drum. As soon as lie lifted the lid a tongue of fire shot out and caused a loud explosion, hurling Brennan against the shed and severely burning his face. ' It is time the i'own Board appointed a ranger, in view of the fact that a number of unregistered stock is always in the township. The Town Board' lamp-lighter and custodian has resigned l.is position after a number of years' steady work The old man is getting too frail for the job on winter nights. Mr Cave proprietor ot the Opunake wharf intends building a five-roomed cottage on a site bandy to the wharf. Mr" Todd's boiling down works were put up for auction at the beginning of the week, but did not bring the reserve price, although the timber yards and Utes were disposed of. There is a likelihood of a sale being effected pnvatelv. There is also a good chance of the works being re-opened if the right man is prepared to come along, as there is good authority for the assertion that the Stock Department will be a considerable supplier. Mrs. Nicol is at present very ill. Mrs. Macfie is also in the hands of the district nurse, and Mrs. Murphy is at present seriously ill in the Xew .Plymouth Hospital. Mr. N. J. Brennan. who has been l»r some weeks in a private hospital in 11aivcra, is making slow progress. It will probably be some weeks before we have him back again amongst us. The weather has changed a little lor the worse, but very little hand feeding is necessary for the stock, on account of the good and regular growth of grass The district nurse has her bauds full around the district. The doctor and the nurse have a good sized district to look after, and, usual with sickness, it comes in heaps. It looks as if there is going to be a .•new staff at the Opunake dairy factory. ' The butter-maker has resigned, and now I hear the manager is doing likewise. As this comprises the whole stall, it means a new staff. It was expected that some interesting developments would have_ taken place at the Harbor Hoard meeting Irom the visit of the chairman and Mr. Unurc to Wellington, but the meeting lapsed (for want of a quorum.
