AN EXCITING RUMOR.
WILD SCENE AT THEATRE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. A rumor originated here to-night that the Kaiser and Crown Prince had oeen assassinated by the mob in Berlin. The rumor aoon reached the Opera House, where Mr. W. 11. George was delivering a lecture on Egypt to a packed house. The Mayor announced the sensational news from the platform, and the audience rose in a body, cheered, and- sang the National Anthem. The ambulance men from Awapuni Camp gave a haka, amid indescribable scenes of enthusiasm. Finally the Manawatu Times office was rung up And the rumor was contradicted. How the news originated is a mystery. Some say that it was featured on the screens at the picture shows, but the managers say that their first intimation was from the Opera House. A probable explanation of the rumor is that news of the rioting in Berlin was posted on the Times' window.
