TRAMWAYS EXTENSION.
To the Eidtor. Sir,—The report of the deputation of the Wostown-Stamliah Hill tramway extension committee's waiting on the Borough Council was very interesting. The committee deserves ere.lit for trying to promote the interest of their district; but any effort to extend the tramway without laying before the Borough Council a scheme as to how the money can be raised must at once completely fail, l'n the first place, the extending of the tramway half a mile up the hill would he utterly useless, and would do inore harm than good, as it would be the cause of stopping the 'bus, which is the only public conveyance available for running out to Westown. In the next place, it may seem a simple matter to lay down half a mile of rails oil a road that is already metalled, but they would find that the Government would not pass a road for traffic where trams are laid unless the road was properly laid and tarred at least forty feet from side to side. Any scheme to extend the tramways without including Avenue road, Vogeitown, Frank ley Park and Spotswood would not be likely to succeed, and the only way to hnance the undertaking would he to"create a special rating area of the districts mentioned, as is done in metalling roads. It is hardly likely that the ratepayers in the centre of the town ,woul<l care to saddle themselves with another loan, seeing IVy are heavily ratfd for the loans already in existence. —I a in, etc., BOROUGH RATEPAYEE.
