TEACHERS' ENLISTMENT.
VIEWS OF EDUCATION BOARD. At yesterday's meeting of the Taranaki Education Board, a letter was read from the Director of Education relative to limiting the enlistment of teachers. The chairman moved —''That this Board, while regretting that a certain amount of inconvenience lias been caused by the enlistment of teachers, is of opinion that no obstacle should be .placed in the way of tca-chers of military age wishing to enlist." Ip supporting Hie motion, he strongly urged that no obstacles should be placed in the way of teachers or anyone else enlisting, as the one great important part was the successful issue of the w/r, and all other matters, even the process jf education and dairying, .must give way. In seconding the motion, Mr. Masters considered that the Government had taken a wrong attitude over the-matter. It was the duty of the country to send every possible man to fight the enemy.
Mr. Morton supported the motion, though lie emphasised tho necessity of leaving sufficient men to produce food for our men, that being quite as important lis munitions. If the whole of the teachers volunteered they would be taking the right course. Rev. Chappell embodied his views in the following amendment—"That this Board, while believing chat no reasonable effort should be spared to win the war, believes that voluntary enlistment should be replaced by such n national organisation of the resources of the country as will secure sufficient men to keep up our promised military ENpeditionary Forces, and also maintain our country's various domestic activities at the strength required to preserve an efficiency demanded by present needs." The amendment was not seconded. Messrs Adlam and Mflrfell strongly supported the motion, the latter expressing his pride at so many Taranaki men enlisting. The motion was carried without dissent.
