7 The game between Ta Ante College , E and New Plymouth High School proved, :u was expected, a clean and open match, n full of interest, and it is safe to say that s not one of those present was disappointJ m 1 with the, exhiibtion. The result prov--1 ed a surprise, it being expected that the native boys, who wore, on the average,' ' 17lli heavier than the local lads, would "'in. The High School boys, however, j played a great game, both in attack and' - defence, and thoroughly deserved their - victory by 0 'points to 3. The Te Aute forwards, though able to push the scrum, did not succeed in securing tho'ball as often as the local team, whose backs "ere quick to get among the visitors and spoil their passing rushes, particularly in the second spell, when Te Auto were often dangerous. The game was very last, and, considering the heavy ground, it was a very good exhibition of : Rugger. ■ ( To Aute, with the sun in their eyes, defended the western goal. Brown set ' the ball in motion, and the visiting pack 1 followed up smartly, but MoMurray lined. Beating the "visitors on the lineout, the local lads opened out the game, Kidd handling the ball well and setting his backs moving. Yates made a 'good run, but was well collared by Hepere. A little later, Riddiford Intercepted a pass and kicked down field, but Woods (full-back) was safe, and found touch at half-way. The local boys were passing well, and Herbert, running strongly, was collared just in time by Riddiford. McMurray on two occasions hung on, badly, at the second time, from an open-* ing by Atkinson, spoiling a certain try, as he only had the firll-back to beat, Infringement gave Yates a shot at goal, the ball falling short. Hepere kicked down field and Rehua and Brown, fol- . lowing up fast, smothered Ewing, but Yates came to the rescue and lined well. Auother hot Te Aute rush was well stopped by Ewing, arid Hindinarsh failing to take the ball, the local backs were on him, and the ball went out at .' half-way. A well-judged kick by Yates found touch at the twenty-five, and then ensued a pretty piece of play. Kidd passed to McAlurray, who sent to Bayly, who made a fine run, and transferred at the right time to Herbert, who streaked over. Yates failed to goal. New Plymouth, 3; Te Aute nil. Immediately the whites attacked again, and Wyborn forced his way over .4 the line, but lost the ball. A little •§ later Kidd secured from a scrum, and . $ with a "corkscrew" run, scored tat; ' 1 second try. Herbert failed to goal. Brown broke away, but was well checked by Kidd. 'Paul -picked up smartly and set his backs going, but the s local defence prevailed. Infringements in the scrum gave Hindinarsh a' shot, ~■ which just failed, and High School fore- •] ed. Passing bouts by the locals and -.* forward rushes by the visitors compris- . cd the play during the balance of the •",? •spell, in which Woods, at full, was pro- .f. minent. The opening of the second spell saw '. Te Ante attack, a well-judged kick by Moses finding touch at the corner. Te Ante made desperate attempts to score. Paul passed to Moses, who failed' to tuke and Woods wns able to clear with } a kick at the twenty-five. McKay next headed n fine local forward .rush, but , Timu picked up smartly and lined. Hieh School got in a good position, but faulty scrum work nave the visitor? a fret kick and relief. Later on. the visitors gave a taste of their passing. Swinton shot the leather to und Hftiiere. Riddiford and Moses handling well, the latter, after a fine rush, grounded the ball over the line. Hindmarsk just failed to goal. New Plymouth, !1; Te AuuC 3. This success encouraged the visitors, who attacked again, and an infringement by the locals gave Hindinarsh anothei shot, the'ball Just going under the bar. Fast play ensued; the ball travelling up and down the field. The teams niiulo the game open, and both full-backs were kept busy, and did not fail. A passing bout by the locals found Hayly ofr-side, and Brown lined down field. Here McMurruy' had to retire, Cnllendar fillin* the vacancy. From a serum at centre Terry and Callendar broke away, but * Timu went down well, and Te Aute forwards retaliating, brought play hack tc mid'tield, and the Red forwards gradually worked tho ball back. Swinton, ■ Hepere and Ilindniarsh passed, but the ■, latter failed to pick up, and from a -, scrum Brown lined at tile corner. Tho ', . visitors striveel hard to increase theii score, but could not penetrate (lie local lads' defence. Callendar especially being prominent. Hindinarsh on two oc?niinns ' narrowly failed, to score. Judicious play by Jloses brought play to the corner on two' or three occasions., hut finally a • passing bout by Swinton, Hindinarsh,, ■ Tetcna, Riddiford and Moses saw lh< ' . latter pnt over tho line, and Ewing forced. Forward and back, Te Auto pressed again, hut a hot rush, headed by McKay, Fouhy and Terry, brought relief. . Back came Te Ante with a passing rush, in which all the backs participated, Riddiford finally lining at the cor-iu-r. Terry next intercepted another *J pass when Te Aute looked dangerous.
