A MOTOR-CAR FATALITY.
(RUN DOWN BY EXPRESS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. • A fatal accident occurred on the railway line this afternoon. A taxi-cab, driven by a man named Madfeey of Palmerston North, with three passengers (J. Evans, stock agent, of Palmerston, Mr. H. H. Goudy and Mrs. Goudy, farmers of Ruanui), was attempting to cross the railway line on the Palmerston side Of Taonui station, but collided with the New Plymouth-Wellington express. The taxi was approaching from the left hand side. It was completely hooded, and was going the same way as the train was. The driver could not' see or hear the express coming, and went straight on the line, where the express crashed into the cab, at an estimated speed of 45 miles per hour. The taxi was smashed to matchwood. The driver and Mr. Evans escaped with minor injuries, but Goudy and Mrs. Goudy were thrown back on their heads on to the cattle stops, receiving very serious injuries. The express pulled up, and 1 the injured people were brought to Palmerston and conveyed to the hospital, where Goudy died from head injuries. Mrs. Goudy's. condition is critical.
