SIX O'CLOCK CLOSING.
■MEETINGS FOR AND AGAINST. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Auckland, June 22. A large public meeting was held in the Town Hall to-night, at which the Mayor presided, and passed resolutions demanding that hotel bars should be brought under the Shops and Offices Act; also expressing indignation that the Government had not made provision for (j o'clock closing, and asking for a referendum on the subject if Parliament is not prepared to introduce the necessary .legislation without it. Wellington, Last Night.
A well-attended meeting of business men, at the Chamber of Commerce, was addressed by Mr. Armstrong, secretary of the Moderate League, and adopted the following resolution: "That this meeting of commercial and professional ■men of Wellington is strongly opposed to the request made by a recent deputation to the 'Prime Minister for a refer l endum on the question of six o'clock closing, and that the said deputation had no authority to speak on behalf of the commercial community. Further, tliat this meeting looks with grave doubt upon the experiment of curtailing the hours of licensed houses, and urges the Government to firmly resist all pressure to hurry the passing of legislation on a matter that should only be approached with the greatest caution, and after thorough investigation."
