STRATFORD

WANTON CRUELTY, (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday. A gross ease of cruelty to animals came under the notice of "your own" yesterday morning. Two cows were in the saleyards, and had been there since early on Tuesday morning, without food or water. In company with a gentleman who has been connected with stock all his life, a visit was paid to the yards, and the information received was confinned. The cattle could not lie down, owing to the filth in the yard, and here they had been since Tuesday without means of sustenance. The case is a shocking one, and whoever is responsible should be brought to book, The need of a braneli of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, becomes more apparent every day, and surely there is someone in our midst who will volunteer to keep a watchful eye on eases of cruelty, and report such lo the New Plymouth branch. Perhaps the Borough Council might instruct its inspector to visit the yard after each -ale day, and thus prevent cases like the present one recurring. It is only fair to say the police have the matter in hand. GENERAL, The Senior Cadets played the Stratford School on Thursday afternoon, and after a close game the former won by C points to 5. Mr. A. C. King, who was formerly with Messrs. Wake and Wright has joined the stall of Messrs. Wright and Laurence. as maraging clerk. Mr. King has enlisted for the front, but it will be several months before he will be called up. A reminder is given of the open-air performance by I lie Anzac Minstrels in Broadway, on Saturday afternoon. The proceeds are in aid of the dependents of ou)'. gallant sailors who lost their lives in the great naval battle.

The Railway Department staff are at present improving the entrances to the ;ni!way station When the work, is completed, it w'll undoubtedly improve the appearance of this portion of Broadway.
