DISTRICT NEWS.
HURWORTIL (From a Correspondent). There was a happy gathering at the Carrington school last Thursday evening, when the annual social in connection with 'the Hurworth Methodist Church was held. Rev. A. R Chappell, of New Plymouth, who presided, brought with him a party of vocalists, and, under his capable management, a most enjoyable programme was arranged. Mrs. A. B. Chappell opened the", concert with a pianoforte solo, and songs, tastefully selected, were successfully rendered by Mrs. Chappell,. Rev. A. B. Chappell, Mr. and Mrs. Macdonald, Mr and Mrs. White and Rev. C. H. Old, Mr, White acting as accompanist. Each item was much appreciated, Mr. and Mrs. Macdonald and : Rev. Old being recalled. Mrs. Macdonald's, singing certainly surpassed any-1 thing that has ever before been heard! here. Rev. Jhappell lecited the "Hell Gate of Soissons" with much feeling, and his and Mr. Old's humorous readings and recitations evoked much laughter. At the conclusion of the programme the chairman thanked Messrs. Bond and Peppereli, who had lent their cars for the occasion. He also conveyed special thgjiks to Miss Ida Rqwlinson, who had proved a tower of strength in an endeavor to help along the good work of i the church'as secretary. The Carrington school children are at present making final arrangements for their annual concert, which is to be held on the 29th inst.
The fortnightly assemblies which are conducted under the auspices of the School Committee have so far proved a success, and the chairman (Mr. Yeates) on whose shoulders the brunt of the ,work falls, hopes to have a fair sum to hand over to the Relief Fund at the end of the season. " OMATA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Private J. Henriksen, a former resident of Omata, is at present in the district looking up old friends prior to leaving with the "Fifteenth's" for the front. Ou tof a family of six brothers all of exceptionally fine physique, and all bom in the Omata district, four are already in the trenches "somewhere in France." Not a bad record! Mr. C. Henriksen, the father, was at one time well known in these parts as a contractor. After an unprecedented spell of warm dry weather we are now being treated with springlike showers. It really seems as if winter has for once forgotten to frown. After worshipping at its feet for thirty-four years, and closely observing its'varying moods and changes, the writer has never before known Mt. E°mont to be as free from snow at this time of the year. The phenomenon is all the more marked when away in the interior Ruapehu is seen to be clothed with its usual winter covering. Owing to a case of diphtheria havin« been reported in the district, the local ichool has been closed.
