USE OF SUBMARINES DEFENDED. Amsterdam, June 19. Admiral von Koestnr, at a meeting of the 'Flottenverein, said: "We are entitled to use the submarine weapon in the most daring way against an enemy using mines and aeroplanes, especially when President Wilson, the advocate of humanity and justice, has provided the enemy with munitions, without which he would be unable to continue the war."

Political and commercial circumstances had forced Germany to abandon reckless submarine warfare for the present,, but he hoped the fleet would have better times.

MEAT RATIONS REDUCED.

Meat rations at Berlin have been reduced this week to SOO grammes (10 ounces) per head.

SCARCITY OF FOOD AT MUNICH.

Copenhagen, June 19. The scarcity of food at Munich led to serious rioting and stone-throwing at the week-end. Many soldiers were among the demonstrators in a mob which clamored for peace. The police dispersed the crowd. Bread cards are now being issued.

VON MOLTKE'S DEATH.

General von Moltke bad become exceedingly stout of late. Tie was speaking at a memorial service, and described General von der GolU as one of the world's best organisers. ■ His audience noticed that he was.taken suddenly ill. He expired in a few moments, during the Turkish- Ambassador's speech. The solemnities were close! at once.

Aa incendiary fire destroyed Heine's meat-curing factory at Halberstadt. It was one of the largest in Germany, It was engaged on an important army contract of two million pounds of tinned meat. Enormous quantities of fresh and cured meat were burnt.
