BOROUGH COUNCIL.
T ORKS COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Works Committee of the Borough Council was held on i Monday night, after the adjourned meet- : ing of the Council. The engineer reported that the cost of metalling and soltarring Courtenay street would be £997, and Gill street £726. The Mayor made a statement relative to the position 0/ the loan fund, whereby it appeared there would be only a comparatively small sum available, after providing for the destructor and culvert and finishing the tramway route. It was decided that the engineer should not proceed with the work. The engineer also reported that the gutter in Robe street, near the Post Office, required repairing He estimated the cost at £9. 1 ' Cr. Collis advocated similar work on the other side of the l'ost Office. The work suggested by the engineer was authorised. A letter was read from Mr. Baker and others relative to the state of the pathway in Bulteel street and robestreet, and urging attention being paid thereto. The engineer reported that the paths were unkerbed, and suggested widening them to 1C feet, also tarring and sanding. The loan allocation would suffice for the work. Cr. Watkins contended that tlve couch was the chief trouble. ' Cr Collis advocated tarring and sanding a strip of the patk only and grassing the remainder. Cr. Short considered the cost of keeping the grass in order would be prohibitive He moved that the engineer be authorised to do the work as suggested Cr. Medley moved as an amendment that the path be not widened. Cr. Wilson, in seconding the amendment, advocated tree planting. The amendment was carried. surfacemen 10s per day, whether they did spreading work or not. The engineer reported in favor of paying 10s only to men engaged in spreading, in accordance with the award, and it was decided to adopt that course. A petition was received from A. i\ Brooker and others for the formation of the Waiwaka road, the cost of which the engineer .estimated at £443. In moving that the matter be deferred indefinitely, Cr. Short expressed the opinion that the Fitzroy people had had
more than their share of the work done by the Council, and that although this Work hail been included in a loan the Council would be quite justified in diverting the money to more urgent work. The Mayor contended that as the work formed part of the loan money it should be carried out. Cr Wilson contended that there were a number of streefc requiring attention before the road in question. It was decided to defer the work, but authority was given to the engineer to metal 2>/<. chains of mad which formed a connecting link between Chilman and Mahoe streets. erection of the fence and tne nning »o .v at I.U property in Morley street should be done in accordance with an agreement made in 1912.—Sanctioned. The District Health Officer wrote urging the necessity of water and drainage beTn" available at Mr. Baker's property on Olen road. It was decided to lay on the water, but that it was not practicable to carry the drainage system to that locality. Mr. L. A. Nolan wrote asking the Council to provide an effective means of carrying off the storm-water at the intersection of Gill and Liardet streets, as it now overflowed into his store. The engineer recomended another culvert At a cost of £B, and that was authorised. The proposal of the Reserves Committee to fence off part of Lemon street was agreed to. Mr. P. Messenger submitted plans and estimates for fitting up and furnishing the Council's new offices at a cost of £423, 'but as there were items (such as flooring) to which exception was taken in view of the state of the Council's finances, the matter was referred to the Furnishing Committee for their report. The consideration of the request ot motor cvclists relative to the modification of the by-law against pillion riding was deferred. Messrs Govett and Quilliam (the Council's solicitors) wrote submitting a clause fDj_insertiqn in_ the Reserves and Other Council to 'permit the use of the Town Hall buildings by members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, or that the premises might he let and the revenue devoted to the upkeep of the Town Hall, Museum or Library.—Approved. It was decided that the tramways manager and the borough engineer should confer and report on the request for the provision of conveniences for tramwaymen at Fitzroy and Moturoa. On the suggestion of Cr. Collis, it was decided that thi. path in front of Mr. Hill's Devon street store be tarred and sanded, so as to reinstate it as it was before the tramway work was car. ried out. , , ~,,, .
