BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The adjourned meeting of the Council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. 11. Burgess). Crs Medley, Hayden, F. Wilson, Collis, Short, Hill, Mannix, Watkins. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Griffljis. INSURANCES. Pursuant to notice, Cr. Watkin? moved to rescind the resolution deciding to draw for the ofiice in which the Council's accident insurance policy was to be taken out. He considered it woi*d be wiser for the Council to select a company which would give a policy for a period longer than a year as - it did not seem fair when a company bad a heavy loss on the insurance not to have the policy continued. The Mayor pointed out that as the matter of the whole of the Council's insurances was to be considered the resolution as to accident insurance would block the way of a general review.

This motion was carried. A letter was read from the Standard Company, asking for h renewal of accident insurance policy, in views of the claims amounting to fGOO under the Council's policy.

A letter was read from Mr. Paton, on behalf of certain insurance companies, suggesting that the Council's insurances should remain as they were for this year, and that meanwhile the policies sllould be consolidated as much as possible, the companies to suggest a scheme under which the whole of the Council's insurances could he divided among the offices transacting insurance business in New Plymouth. The Mayor stated that the idea was to reduce the Council's policies to six, and thus save some twenty policies. He suggested agreeing to Air. Paton's proposal. Cr. Coll is moved to leave the present system as to the whole of the Council's insurances as it is this year. and. that in the meantime the insurances be consolidated as much as possible; also, that it be a recommendation to the incoming Council to review the whole question of the Council's insurances. The motion was carried.

The Council then considered the question of accident insurance, and it was moved that it bo decided by ballot.

Cr. Collis moved that in view of the claims on the Standard Company, amounting to some £6OO or £7OO, that office be given the Council's accident insurance business for this year. Cr, Watkins, in supporting the motion, protested against being worried by canvassers for this business. Cr. Wilson supported the motion. The amendment was lost.

Or. Hayden moved that all the Accident Insurance Companies should be included in the ballot, and this was added to'the motion, which was then carried.
