Mr. A. H. Johnstone was a passenger for, Wellington by the mail train yesterday moraing. The Kev. T. H. Rosevcare of St. Andrew's Church, New Plymouth, has received a call to the Presbyterian Church at Cambridge. Captain W. H. Hawkins, who has been visiting New Plymouth, left for camp by the mail train yesterday. Captain Hawkins ' leaves very shortly for the •ront, with the 14th Reinforcements. Messrs. T. P. News has been, received (says the Timaru Herald), that Sub-Lieutenant Dearden, grandson of the late Mr. John Grigg, of Longbeach, had been rescued from the Queen Mary by the Germans in the recent North Sea battle, and is now a prisoner of war.

Lieutenant W. D. Stewart, M.P., lias been reappointed by the Dunedin City Council to represent that body on the Council of the University of Otago. The Mayor explained at the last meeting nf the council that the University Council would extend Lieutenant Stewart's leave of absence as necessary, Mr. Fred Pirani, for twenty years a member of the Wanganui Education Board, and for ten years past its chairman, has decided to retire from the board at the, end of next month. The cause of death was the bursting of a blood vessel on the brain.
