ON THE SEA.
THE CORONEL BATTLE,
MEMORIAL TO ADMIRAL CRADOCK. EULOGY BY MR. BALFOUR. Received June 17, 7.30 p.m. London, June 17. A monument to Admiral Cradock, who was lost in the Coronel naval fight, was unveiled at York Minster. The cathedral was crowded, and after the Last Post had been sounded, at the end of a solemn service, Mr. A. J. Balfour unveiled a beautiful marble alabaster j memorial. He said that Admiral Cradock's deed 1 was not on<= 0 f uncalculating daring, but | was inspired by higher wisdom than calI dilation ar.d higher courage than daring. He attacked the enemy because he knew that the German fleet in the Pacific was far from dockyards where it could refit, and no friendly bases were open if the vessels suffered damage, and their power for evil would be utterly destroyed. Adnyral Cradock was unable to foresee the battle of the Falklands; he onl> knew that the German squadron was a great peril in the Pacific while it remained efficient. Admiral Cradock had judged that his squadron would be well sacrificed if it destroyed the power of the hostile fleet.
Mr. Balfour continued: "If I am right in estimating Admiral Cradock's motives, there was never a nobler act, unsuccessful though it was, than the Coronel fight. Admiral Cradock and his comrades have won an immortal place on the roll, of naval heroes who have built up the Empire." •Receded June IS, 5.5 p.m. London, June 17. Official:.
