NAVAL ACTION IN THE BALTIC. GERMAN CONVOY SURPRISED. ' BY RUSSIAN-DESTROYERS. CRUISER AND DESTROYER SUNK. Received June 15, 8.30 p'.m. Copenhagen, June 14. A brisk naval encounter has taken place in the Baltic. A German cruiser, two destroyers,.and eight armored trawlers were convoying fourteen steamers near Nykoepsing when six Russian destroyer* and several submarines suddenly attacked them at such a speed that the Germans were completely surprised and only fired a single shot. The trawlers then turned and made for port at full speed, two arriving much damaged. The Russians sank the cruiser Koenig von Sachsen, the whole of the crew being drowned. Then also sank a German destroyer, but a trawler was able to save 150 of the crew. The fourteen merchantmen were sunk.

The action lasted forty-five minutes. The Russian vessels were unharmed.

MEMORIAL SERVICE AT ST. PAULS.

London, June 14.

St. Paul's Cathedral was thronged for the memorial service to those who died in the naval battle. Those present were chiefly relatives of those lost, and also many officers and Bluejackets who participated in the fight.
